Classified according to the input voltage, the SMD LED strip lights can be divided into the high-voltage and the low-voltage. The input voltage of the low voltage light bar is commonly 12V or 24V DC, and the high-voltage light bar is 220V AC. So what are the differences between the two? 1. Safety performance: As we all know, the voltage of AC 220V is dangerous, which is not suitable for some places that people can easily touch. 3. The price: The price of the LED lights themselves are close, but it is different from the overall cost. At current market prices, the cost of the low-voltage power supply accounts for a large share of the total cost. Therefore, the overall usage cost of low-voltage LED strips will be higher.

4. Service life: The lifespan of the low-voltage LED strips will be 50,000 hours. Using the same material, the high-voltage LED lights will have a higher working temperature and faster droop, which directly shorten the working life.

The new SMD 2835 LEDs up to 200 lm/W were launched

Recently, Lumileds announced the launch of the new LUXEON 2835 HE LED, which has an efficiency of up to 200 lm/W and provides a new definition of color consistency for LEDs on the market.

These new LEDs are optimized for outstanding efficiency and second-order MacAdam elliptical color consistency in applications such as troffers and high-bay/low-bay luminaires.

Sam Wu, Lumileds' mid-power product line product manager, said, "These LEDs have tight color points that are not found in other mid-power devices in their class. The second-order MacAdam Elliptical Design Kit delivers optimal color consistency for demanding lighting applications." These LEDs achieve a luminous flux of 36 lm and an efficiency of 202 lm/W at a drive current of 65 mA and achieve a luminous flux of 220 lm (4000K and 80 CRI) at a drive current of 480 mA.

Sam Lux explains, “The SMD 2835 LEDs is ideal for applications that require luminaire efficiencies greater than 150 lm/W, and the number of LEDs must be minimized.” Lumileds' high-reliability design makes LUXEON 2835 HE Provides more light for smaller general lighting applications.

The LUXEON 2835 HE offers a range of color temperatures and 70 to 90 CRI options for a variety of general lighting designs. These LEDs can be used immediately to replace the 2835 LED package (2.8 x 3.5 mm) or to replace the 5630 (5.6 x 3.0 mm) or 3030 (3.0 x 3.0 mm) medium power bead with similar optical requirements.

LED Lights Power Supply Basics

LED driving power is a converter that converts input voltage and current into specific values required for LEDs. Generally, the input of the LED power source includes commercial power,  low voltage DC, high voltage DC, low voltage high-frequency AC, etc. The core components of the LED power supply include a switch controller, an inductor, a switching component, feedback resistor, input filter component, the output filter component, and so on. According to the different requirements, there are also have a variety of protection circuit.

Sometimes, what decides the lifespan of LED lights is not themselves, but the drive power. A good power supply requires high reliability, high efficiency, and protection functions. High reliability ensures smooth operation of power supplies and LED lights, reducing post-maintenance costs. The high efficiency will reduce consumption, which reduces the temperature rise of the LED. Moreover, according to the service environment, the power supply also needs to add the corresponding protection function to prevent the lamp from being damaged by the electrical surge, reverse voltage and so on.

According to the driving mode, the power supply can be divided into the constant current supply and the stabilized voltage supply. The current output by the constant current driving circuit is constant, and the output DC voltage varies within a certain range depending on the magnitude of the load resistance. When the parameters in the voltage stabilizing circuit are determined, the output voltage is fixed, and the output current changes as the load increases or decreases. The constant current supply is more suitable for LED lights than the stabilized supply, but the cost of is also higher.

LED lighting helps to plant and harvest fruits in winter

The development of grow lights continues to change our understanding of agriculture. In recent years, with the maturity of LED plant lights technology, more and more plant factories use LED grow lights, and many institutions have conducted research on LED lighting planting crops.

Recently, a Dutch company called Delphy has conducted a study on the use of LED lighting to grow raspberries and blackberries, aiming to harvest fruits during the winter. They first tried using LED lights to grow raspberries and blackberries in November last year and harvested fresh blackberries in March this year. This experiment shows that under limited natural light conditions, the BlackBerry can be successfully cultivated by LED lighting. Based on this experience, in September, the researchers started a new project to grow long-term preserved and frozen blackberry plants and plan to harvest the fruits in December.

According to Delphy, the project is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture and Nature & Food Quality Department, which aims to study the influence of indoor LED lighting and light intensity to promoting crop maturity. At the same time, the research will also develop a future-oriented and energy-efficient new planting concept to grow crops in winter.

LED heat dissipation technology and materials

Heat dissipation is a principal factor affecting the illumination intensity of LED lights. In order to achieve a better effect, all of the LED lights manufacturers and related research institutes have been working to improve the heat dissipation technology and materials.

In general, the heatsink can be divided into the passive heatsink and the active heatsink. Passive heat dissipation means that the heat of the LED light source is naturally radiated into the air through the heatsink, and the heat dissipation effect is proportional to the size of the heatsink. However, it can only be used in LED lights of relatively low power. For example, the aluminum PCB of the rigid LED light strip is equivalent to a heatsink. The high power LED lights such as the LED grow light commonly adopts active heat dissipation, that is, the heat emitted by the heat sink is forcibly taken away by the heatsink such as the fan, which is characterized by high cooling efficiency and the small volume.
Heat Conductivity Coefficient

As can be seen from the above table, silver and copper are the best thermal materials, followed by gold and aluminum. However, gold and silver are too expensive, so the current heat sink is mainly made of aluminum and copper. In comparison, both copper and aluminum alloy have their own advantages and disadvantages. Copper has good thermal conductivity, but the price is relatively expensive, the processing is difficult, the weight is too large, and the copper heat sink has a small heat capacity and is easily oxidized. On the other hand, pure aluminum is too soft to be used directly. The aluminum alloy used can provide sufficient hardness. The advantage of aluminum alloy is that it is cheap and light, but the thermal conductivity is much worse than copper. Of course, there are some radiators for other materials, such as fiberglass, ceramics, etc., and because of their price and process, they also have a place in the market.

The LED industry has extremely strict requirements on the alignment accuracy of the heat-dissipating substrate itself, and it needs to have characteristics such as high heat dissipation, small size, and good adhesion of metal lines. To improve LED luminous efficiency and service life, solving the heat dissipation problem of LED products is one of the most important issues at this stage.

Germany successfully grows vegetables in the arctic with the help of LED grow lights

According to the German arctic research camp, researchers have successfully planted and harvested 183kg of fresh vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, kohlrabi and so on. This successful trial not only marks that the humans have the ability to planting in the Arctic but also set an example for other researchers who try to grow plants in other harsh natural environments and outer space.

It is extremely difficult for supply ships to enter the Arctic during the winter because the sea will be covered with extremely thick ice. Although the tomatoes grown in this greenhouse aren't as big as those grown outside, its vitamin content exceeds that of refrigerated vegetables.
