LED Strip 220V vs 12V

LED strips are often used to outline the contours of buildings, to build large lighting patterns, interior decorations, home lighting, and so on.

Classified according to the input voltage, the SMD LED strip lights can be divided into the high-voltage and the low-voltage. The input voltage of the low voltage light bar is commonly 12V or 24V DC, and the high-voltage light bar is 220V AC. So what are the differences between the two? What are the advantages and disadvantages of them? This post will give you the answer.

1. Safety performance: As we all know, the voltage of AC 220V is dangerous, which is not suitable for some places that people can easily touch. The low-voltage LED light bar works under the working voltage of DC 12V or 24V that is no danger to the person. 3. The price: The price of the LED lights themselves are close, but it is different from the overall cost. At current market prices, the cost of the low-voltage power supply accounts for a large share of the total cost. Therefore, the overall usage cost of low-voltage LED strips will be higher.

4. Service life: The lifespan of the low-voltage LED strips will be 50,000 hours. Using the same material, the high-voltage LED lights will have a higher working temperature and faster droop, which directly shorten the working life.

The new SMD 2835 LEDs up to 200 lm/W were launched

Recently, Lumileds announced the launch of the new LUXEON 2835 HE LED, which has an efficiency of up to 200 lm/W and provides a new definition of color consistency for LEDs on the market.

These new LEDs are optimized for outstanding efficiency and second-order MacAdam elliptical color consistency in applications such as troffers and high-bay/low-bay luminaires.

Sam Wu, Lumileds' mid-power product line product manager, said, "These LEDs have tight color points that are not found in other mid-power devices in their class. The second-order MacAdam Elliptical Design Kit delivers optimal color consistency for demanding lighting applications." These LEDs achieve a luminous flux of 36 lm and an efficiency of 202 lm/W at a drive current of 65 mA and achieve a luminous flux of 220 lm (4000K and 80 CRI) at a drive current of 480 mA.

Sam Lux explains, “The SMD 2835 LEDs is ideal for applications that require luminaire efficiencies greater than 150 lm/W, and the number of LEDs must be minimized.” Lumileds' high-reliability design makes LUXEON 2835 HE Provides more light for smaller general lighting applications.

The LUXEON 2835 HE offers a range of color temperatures and 70 to 90 CRI options for a variety of general lighting designs. These LEDs can be used immediately to replace the 2835 LED package (2.8 x 3.5 mm) or to replace the 5630 (5.6 x 3.0 mm) or 3030 (3.0 x 3.0 mm) medium power bead with similar optical requirements.

LED Lights Power Supply Basics

LED driving power is a converter that converts input voltage and current into specific values required for LEDs. Generally, the input of the LED power source includes commercial power,  low voltage DC, high voltage DC, low voltage high-frequency AC, etc. The core components of the LED power supply include a switch controller, an inductor, a switching component, feedback resistor, input filter component, the output filter component, and so on. According to the different requirements, there are also have a variety of protection circuit.

Sometimes, what decides the lifespan of LED lights is not themselves, but the drive power. A good power supply requires high reliability, high efficiency, and protection functions. High reliability ensures smooth operation of power supplies and LED lights, reducing post-maintenance costs. The high efficiency will reduce consumption, which reduces the temperature rise of the LED. Moreover, according to the service environment, the power supply also needs to add the corresponding protection function to prevent the lamp from being damaged by the electrical surge, reverse voltage and so on.

According to the driving mode, the power supply can be divided into the constant current supply and the stabilized voltage supply. The current output by the constant current driving circuit is constant, and the output DC voltage varies within a certain range depending on the magnitude of the load resistance. When the parameters in the voltage stabilizing circuit are determined, the output voltage is fixed, and the output current changes as the load increases or decreases. The constant current supply is more suitable for LED lights than the stabilized supply, but the cost of is also higher.

LED lighting helps to plant and harvest fruits in winter

The development of grow lights continues to change our understanding of agriculture. In recent years, with the maturity of LED plant lights technology, more and more plant factories use LED grow lights, and many institutions have conducted research on LED lighting planting crops.

Recently, a Dutch company called Delphy has conducted a study on the use of LED lighting to grow raspberries and blackberries, aiming to harvest fruits during the winter. They first tried using LED lights to grow raspberries and blackberries in November last year and harvested fresh blackberries in March this year. This experiment shows that under limited natural light conditions, the BlackBerry can be successfully cultivated by LED lighting. Based on this experience, in September, the researchers started a new project to grow long-term preserved and frozen blackberry plants and plan to harvest the fruits in December.

According to Delphy, the project is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture and Nature & Food Quality Department, which aims to study the influence of indoor LED lighting and light intensity to promoting crop maturity. At the same time, the research will also develop a future-oriented and energy-efficient new planting concept to grow crops in winter.

LED heat dissipation technology and materials

Heat dissipation is a principal factor affecting the illumination intensity of LED lights. In order to achieve a better effect, all of the LED lights manufacturers and related research institutes have been working to improve the heat dissipation technology and materials.

In general, the heatsink can be divided into the passive heatsink and the active heatsink. Passive heat dissipation means that the heat of the LED light source is naturally radiated into the air through the heatsink, and the heat dissipation effect is proportional to the size of the heatsink. However, it can only be used in LED lights of relatively low power. For example, the aluminum PCB of the rigid LED light strip is equivalent to a heatsink. The high power LED lights such as the LED grow light commonly adopts active heat dissipation, that is, the heat emitted by the heat sink is forcibly taken away by the heatsink such as the fan, which is characterized by high cooling efficiency and the small volume.
Heat Conductivity Coefficient

As can be seen from the above table, silver and copper are the best thermal materials, followed by gold and aluminum. However, gold and silver are too expensive, so the current heat sink is mainly made of aluminum and copper. In comparison, both copper and aluminum alloy have their own advantages and disadvantages. Copper has good thermal conductivity, but the price is relatively expensive, the processing is difficult, the weight is too large, and the copper heat sink has a small heat capacity and is easily oxidized. On the other hand, pure aluminum is too soft to be used directly. The aluminum alloy used can provide sufficient hardness. The advantage of aluminum alloy is that it is cheap and light, but the thermal conductivity is much worse than copper. Of course, there are some radiators for other materials, such as fiberglass, ceramics, etc., and because of their price and process, they also have a place in the market.

The LED industry has extremely strict requirements on the alignment accuracy of the heat-dissipating substrate itself, and it needs to have characteristics such as high heat dissipation, small size, and good adhesion of metal lines. To improve LED luminous efficiency and service life, solving the heat dissipation problem of LED products is one of the most important issues at this stage.

Germany successfully grows vegetables in the arctic with the help of LED grow lights

According to the German arctic research camp, researchers have successfully planted and harvested 183kg of fresh vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, kohlrabi and so on. This successful trial not only marks that the humans have the ability to planting in the Arctic but also set an example for other researchers who try to grow plants in other harsh natural environments and outer space.

It is extremely difficult for supply ships to enter the Arctic during the winter because the sea will be covered with extremely thick ice. Therefore, It's almost impossible for staff in the Arctic to eat fresh vegetables at that time. In February of this year, The German team built a greenhouse that could withstand temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius and built vertical farms in it. The lack of sunlight in the greenhouse makes artificial lighting indispensable, for this reason, LED grow lights are used to create the light condition for the growth of vegetables. Although the tomatoes grown in this greenhouse aren't as big as those grown outside, its vitamin content exceeds that of refrigerated vegetables.

Four points to note about home lighting #3

From last two posts, Four points to note about home lighting #1, and #2, we learned that the brightness and CCT are the key factors that we need to notice when select and install home lighting. The different brightness and different color temperature can create a completely different home lighting atmosphere.

In post #1, we are mentioned that the luminous difference between different rooms should be controlled in the reasonable range. Our eyes will be uncomfortable and fatigued by frequently adapt to very different brightness. Post #1 represented the overall brightness of the house need to be unified. Not only the whole, as well as the small areas need to pay attention to the contrast between light and dark.

Nowadays, decorative lighting became an important part of interior lighting. Most people like to decorate the living room with LED spotlights, LED strips and other decorative lights. In general, the decorative lights are not high-brightness, which can not provide enough light for our lives. For example, if we only turn on the decorative lights on TV background wall when watching TV at night, the strong contrast of light and dark will cause the eyestrain, even vision impairment in the long run. Likewise, it is also a bad habit that reading under a small desk lamp for a long time. The low-brightness LED light strips are the popular decorative lights in the bedroom, which can also be used as the auxiliary lighting, helping us see and it doesn't dazzling. Four points to note about home lighting #2

From the last post, FOUR POINTS TO NOTE ABOUT HOME LIGHTING #1, we knew that the significance of selecting the proper brightness in home lighting. In this post, we are going to introduce that the influence of the CCT (Correlated Color Temperature), one of the main specifications of LED lights, in-house lighting. Just like brightness, different colors of light can bring about a completely different indoor lighting environment. As we all know, the reddish white light, that is, the warm white light will make people feel relaxed and easeful, and the bluish cool white light is beneficial to concentration.

Therefore, it is improper that select the same CCT LED lights in all space of the house. Although the warm white LED light can create a warm and comfortable lighting atmosphere, it is not suitable for the activities that require concentration. Based on this reason, the living room, home office, and kitchen all are the main activity space, which is suitable for neutral white light or the slightly higher CCT LED lights. Likewise, according to the function of the bedroom and bathroom, adopting warm color lighting will be the better choice.

In the posts #1 and #2, we introduced the effect of brightness and CCT respectively in home lighting. From which, we can conclude that both the brightness and the CCT of LED lighting are the key factors to create a reasonable home lighting environment.

Home lighting is an important part of our house. With the development of LED technology, LED lights are applied in our house for illumination and decoration such as LED bulbs, LED tubes, LED Panel Lights, LED strip lights and so on. House lighting allows us to live like we do during the day, as well creates different atmosphere through different lights. But there are a few matters needing attention in the choice of illumination lights. Using lights incorrectly not only wastes electric energy and cost but also have a negative influence on our lives. We will cover this topic in four parts because there is too much content, hoping the posts will be helpful to you.
In this post, we are going to talk about the brightness, the most obvious factor, that has the biggest effect on human sense. As we all know, our eyes had better not often work in areas that are too bright or too dark. Because of the hard light will hurt our eyes, and the dim light makes people unable to see clearly, which result in eyestrain. Therefore, it is necessary to design different lighting schemes according to the structure of the house to achieve the proper brightness.
The functional areas inside the house have different lighting requirements. For example, the living room is an area for daily activities and entertainment, which determines that it needs to be the bright environment. Similarly, other areas of daily activity, such as the dining room, home office, reading room etc., require relatively high brightness to meet the needs. However, the light in the bedroom cannot be too bright, for it is the place for rest and the bright light is not good for sleep. Likewise, the soft light will be more suitable for the bathroom.
Furthermore, it has to be taken into account that although the above shows that various areas need different illumination intensity, the brightness of different places in a house should not be too different. The main materials of LEDs

The LED is mainly composed of six materials: base, silver glue, chip, bond wire, epoxy resin, and phosphor.

1. LED base:
The base, also known as the LED support and LED bracket, inside the LED is used for conducting and supporting, which is generally formed by electroplating of the metal material. There are two types of LED base, that is, cup-shaped brackets and flat brackets, which are applied for concentrated-light LEDs and wide-angle LEDs respectively.

2. Sliver glue:
The role of silver glue is to immobilize the chip and conduct electricity. The proportion of the main components is 75-80% for silver powder, 10-15% for EPOXY and 5-10% for additives.

3. Chip:
The chip is a luminescent semiconductor material, generally produced by using GaP, GaAlAs, GaAs, GaN, etc., and its internal structure has unidirectional conductivity. Due to the chip can not emit white light directly, the white light LED is a mixture of a blue-light chip and a yellow phosphor.

4. Bond wire:
The bond wire is a metal wire used to connect the wafer PAD and the holder. In production, gold wires with a purity of 99.99% are generally used, its specifications are 0.9 mils, 1.0 mils, and 1.1 mils etc.

5. Epoxy resin:
The role of the epoxy resin is to protect the internal structure of the LED and slightly change the color, brightness, and beam angle.

6. Phosphor:
At present, most of the white LED light strips, LED bulbs, LED spotlights, etc. are phosphor conversion LEDs, that is, the blue light emitted by the chip is converted into white light by the corresponding phosphor. The phosphor conversion LED has a simple circuit, low production cost, and good heat dissipation, and is dominant in the current LED product market.

The aluminum substrate of LED light strips

Presently, the heat dissipation of LED strips is one of the major issues for LED light strips companies. The aluminum substrate is used to overcome the difficulty, for it has the great thermal conductivity and excellent heat dissipation. The substrate is a unique copper clad laminate with good thermal conductivity, electrical insulation properties, and machinability. The PCB should be mounted close to the metal base as far as possible to lessen the thermal resistance.
Initially, the features of the aluminum PCB.
1. Using surface mount technology (SMT).
2. The particular circuit design is beneficial for heat diffusion.
3. The lower working temperature of LED lights, improve the dependability, as well as increase service life.
4. Decreasing sizes of the product, and costs of hardware and assembly.
5. Having better mechanical durability than other traditional substrates.

The aluminum-based PCB consists of the copper foil, the thermally conductive insulation layer and the metal plate, and its composition is classified into 3 layers:
1. Circuit layer: it is the same as normal copper clad, and its thickness is 1oz to 10oz.
2. Dielectric layer: also known as the insulation layer, is a low thermal resistance material covering on the LED light strip.
3. Base layer: it is a metal board, usually aluminum or copper.
The circuit layer is the printed circuit that used to connected different components. In most cases, the circuit layer needs to have a large current carrying ability, so that the thick copper foil should be utilized.
The heat conductive insulation layer is the key of the aluminum PCB, which has small heat resistance, great viscoelasticity, resistance to heat aging, and can resist physical and thermal stress.
The metal plate is the base of the substrate, which is needed to has great thermal conductivity. In production, aluminum plate and Copper plates are most commonly applied, which suited to traditional machinings including drilling, punching, and cutting etc.
Aluminum PCB materials have advantages that are unmatched by other materials, such as no need for a heat sink, greatly reduced sizes of LED lights, excellent heat dissipation, good insulation, and mechanical properties etc.
